Mayme Williams looks outside the front window of her home on Oct. 25 at Country Villa Apartments in Moberly. Williams attended the Lincoln School before desegregation and is one of the only living alumna in Moberly today. In 1955, Naomi Brooks and seven other teachers sued the City of Moberly for not integrating Black teachers into desegregated schools. In the end, the 8th District Circuit Court of Appeals claimed it was mere coincidence that only Black teachers were laid off after integration. This case led to the closure of historically Black schools, like Lincoln School, and created a variety of setbacks for teacher diversity today.
